"I went to see the first ever UK gig by legendary Finnish doom band Skepticism at the 18th-century London church St Giles-in-the-Fields last Saturday, and I'll never forget it. The venue was superb, lack of bar and hard pews (literally!) notwithstanding - the perfect setting for Skepticism's Romantic/gothic sensibility, and for the dirge-like (not a negative for a doom band) yet ultimately uplifting music of support act Pantheist. The lighting and sound were excellent and really added to the atmosphere.
We turned up just as Pantheist's set started, and still somehow managed to get seats on the front row. I was spellbound for the whole set. The music shook me to my innards - but in a good way.
Amusing anecdote: Watching the numerous groups of tourists (on "London by night"-type walks) gawking at the long line of leather/black-clad longhairs queuing outside the church at 8pm. I wonder what on earth kind of service they thought was going to take place inside."
